Since 2010 I have taught in the Sports Industry Management program and currently teach Leadership & Management and Communications & Public Relations; previously I taught Digital Media & Consumer Engagement. I also serve as a capstone advisor and continue to connect with many students after graduation and as they progress in their careers.
My communications and marketing career began at Washington & Jefferson College and was followed by more than a decade in Princeton University's Department of Athletics. As the associate director of athletics for public affairs, my emphasis was on communications, marketing and business partnerships for 38 sports.
I came to the D.C. market to lead communications for the Washington Capitals, and as vice president and chief communications officer, my primary focus was media relations, digital and social media, Washington Capitals Charities, community relations, broadcasting and publications. I then became the lead for corporate and executive communications when Ted Leonsis formed Monumental Sports & Entertainment. As Monumental's first chief communications officer, my role required cross-functional collaboration and interaction with a disparate group of stakeholders related to Monumental and its brands (NBA, NHL and WNBA teams; what is now Capital One Arena and George Mason Univeristy's on-campus arena; and the Monumental Foundation). I work closely with ownership and managed strategic communications, including brand messages, media relations, public relations, issues management, radio broadcasting and the relationship with the regional sports television network to ensure coordination across all brands.
I later worked for an independent brand positioning consultancy, representing Monumental and Leonsis, before accepting the role of managing director of communications and marketing at the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason. At IHS, I was charged with assembling and leading a metric-driven communications and marketing team that focused on content creation, digital and social media channels, third-party partnerships, video production, digital marketing campaigns, media relations and thought leadership.
