Georgetown's program prepares emerging leaders to become responsible and trusted professionals empowered to guide the complex processes of urban investment. We firmly believe that cities are uniquely positioned to creatively reconcile social, environmental, and economic crises in a manner which builds human capital. We fully embrace Georgetown University’s traditions of academic excellence and social justice and our program is designed around the individual student and is not cohort-based. We encourage each student to pursue the degree in alignment with their professional goals and aspirations.

Each student pursues the degree at their own pace, including options of accelerated full-time status (15 months), full-time status (two years), or part-time status, which allows students to concurrently engage in professional internships, apprenticeships, or employment. All students must complete a master’s thesis that is defended before a faculty committee. The curriculum embraces the Planning Accreditation Board’s North American standards for graduate programs in urban planning.
