Joseph Wimmer

I have been teaching courses in biblical languages and literature, especially the Hebrew Scriptures, but also biblical theology covering both Testaments, since getting my doctorate in biblical theology in 1980.

I am especially interested in the psalms and in wisdom literature, but also in the Pauline Writings. I have led tours to the Middle East, notably Israel, Jordan, and Egypt, about 7 times, and in the footsteps of John and Paul, Turkey and Greece, about 5 times. I am a Roman Catholic priest, member of the Order of St. Augustine. My special interests include the discussion between Science and Religion. In 2011 I won a $100,000 grant from the John Templeton Foundation to host a series of 4 Conferences at the Washington Theological Union. Topics included the origin of the universe, the origin of life, evolution and ethics, and spirituality in an evolutionary world. These conferences were held between 2011 and 2013; pdf, cd, and dvd files of the 16 talks can be downloaded from www.washtheocon.org, including my talk of November 10, 2012, entitled "The Bible, Evolution, and the Catholic Understanding of Original Sin."
